Warrior’s belt ( Ginutu)

37 very old shell disks strung together on a textile backing with hand-braided twine. Large buckle, also of shell, with buffalo horn centerpiece.

Previously, we had offered and sold on this site, a very fine example of the Ginutu or Ifugao warior’s belt. But this piece far surpasses the previous one in quality. The shells are extremely worn and polished. Binding them together is a braid of almost unbelievable fineness and resiliency. The large center buckle or upod is unchipped.
