This Santo was carved in the round (bulto), and once was encased in bell dome, unfortunately now broken. The gesso and gilding have peeled off, but the intrinsic beauty of the sculpture remains. The virgin has a very delicate face, with the lined neck characteristic of the late 19 th century style. The handling of the drapery and the hair is particularly skillful. The only damage to the piece is missing finger on the virgin’s hand and the missing crescent moon tip on the left side. Here is Mary as a young woman, triumphant and magnificent, standing on Eve’s serpent, whose evil she crushes underfoot. The Santo fits into an ornate base, grooved to hold the bell jar.
