This magnificent example of a Bagobo male costume evinces the high weaving skill of this indigenous group. The Bagobo are widely-known for the intricacy of their abaca weaving and for their ability to decorate the surfaces of their textiles with glass beads.
The pants and shirt are of abaca, minutely embroidered with anthromorphic and zoomorphic figures in a field of lozenges. The shirt has tassels of horse hair, and rows of plastic buttons. Completing the ensemble are a man’s pouch in abaca, fully beaded. As well as a beaded belt with a brass betel nut container. The brass knife completes the ensemble. Has a woven basketry scabbard, the belt is made out of the pulley chain of a water closet, perhaps a later addition.
When viewed in its entirety, this complete costume is a museum quality piece indeed.
