Tagkaolo cotton blouse with mother-of-pearl platelets

Commercial cotton blouse with mother-of-pearl sequins
1950's or earlier

The standard gala costume of Tagkaolo women, this cotton blouse is adorned with hundreds of sequins individually-shaped from mother-of-pearl shell. This pattern on this blouse is a particularly fine execution of the “hawk wing” design. The minute size of each platelet and the density of the design attest to the high degree of craftsmanship in this blouse. The technology for creating such sequins is now lost, and is no longer done among the Tagkaolo and Bagobo.
